Transcription: 5.30 a.m. my second day in Hiratsuka. A quiet dawn on the 4th of July. Most of the city is still asleep, but the wharf is full of activity. My Suka grandfather used to pull me out of bed early in the morning like this to go fishing. He would tell war stories and he liked to sing. really became a city, a trading port on the Tokaido highway because of the ocean on one side and the river on the other.
